CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Kenwood High football has had two players selected as the Clarksville Now Player of the Week after combining for a total of 2 offensive touchdowns, 2 defensive touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.

The Kenwood Knights had a slow start to the 2023-24 season after losing their first five games, however, they’ve picked up their play in recent weeks. Going into their seventh game of the season, Kenwood was coming off a 26-6 victory over the Northeast High Eagles.

The Knights built off their previous performance when they took on the Northwest High Vikings and won their second consecutive game by a score of 47-7. Frederick Ellis II and Christian James served as the Knights playmakers throughout the contest, which earned them both recognition as player of the week.

Player performances

Ellis, who serves as a running back and inside linebacker for the team, found his way into the endzone on three separate occasions. The senior scored one rushing touchdown, one receiving touchdown and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

In addition to his three scores on the night, Ellis also finished the game with 7 carries for 64 yards, 2 two-point conversions, 7 total tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.

While Ellis was recognized for his play on both sides of the ball, James stood out primarily on defense but for good reason. The sophomore defensive back shut down the Vikings passing game throughout the game.

James secured three interceptions during the Knights last game, which was a career-high for the young student athlete. He also tied Clarksville High defensive back Isaiah Soto for the most interceptions in a game this season for a Montgomery County football player. One of James interceptions was returned for a pick-six, which marked Kenwood’s second touchdown of the game against Northwest.

Coaches corner

When asked about each of his players performances against Northwest, Kenwood High head coach Jarhett Snead said as a collective unit, his teams are understanding their roles and jobs.

Snead went on to say that these past two victories mean a lot to his program. “We want to be able to build some momentum throughout this second half of the season to see what we can accomplish,” Snead said.

Kenwood High’s season continues on Oct. 13 as they are scheduled to take on the Dickson County Cougars (3-4)
