High school football in Clarksville Week 2: Picks, power rankings, previews

It’s rivalry week in Montgomery County, with matchups like Springfield-Clarksville, Rossview-Kirkwood and Northeast-West Creek.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – High school football Week 2 will bring more local rivalries, and with bragging rights on the line, this week’s picks are bound to be explosive.

Friday was disappointing for local teams, with Northeast and Kenwood both giving up late leads, while Montgomery Central stunned everybody with a big win over Sycamore. That brought my record to an underwhelming 4-3 through the first week. Week 2 features more in-area matchups, so I’m expecting a much better result from my predictions.

Game of the Week: Springfield Yellow Jackets @ #2 Clarksville Wildcats

Clarksville Now will cover the 103rd Battle of the Bridge for our Game of the Week on Friday. Springfield dominated Rossview 35-3 in Week 1, while Clarksville fell to Rutherford County powerhouse Blackman. With how good the Yellow Jackets looked on Friday, paired with Clarksville still adjusting to new faces in new roles, I’m giving the upper hand to Springfield.

#1 Kirkwood Cobras @ #4 Rossview Hawks

The fourth edition of “Hate on Exit 8” brings these two schools into the matchup in very different positions. Rossview struggled against a very talented Springfield team, while Kirkwood dominated a struggling West Creek squad. The Hawks should hold their own better than the Coyotes did, but Kirkwood’s passing attack will eventually prove too difficult to contain.

#3 Northeast Eagles @ #8 West Creek Coyotes

During our preseason visit to West Creek, this was the game the Coyotes were most excited about. West Creek-Northeast has been a rivalry since the former opened in 2009. Unfortunately for West Creek, the Coyotes haven’t found much success in the series, winning just twice in that span.

After losing 50-0 on Friday, West Creek needs a rebound, but the Eagles simply have too many athletes for the Coyotes to keep up.

Clarksville Now’s Pick: Northeast 42 – West Creek 10

East Hickman Eagles @ #5 Montgomery Central Indians

I owe the Indians an apology for picking against them last week. Montgomery Central dismantled Sycamore, led by five touchdowns from running back Malosi Laban. Although the Eagles will likely be more prepared for the rushing attack, the Indians should have this one under control.

If Montgomery Central can find multiple ways to score, the Indians will start 2-0 for the first time in five years.

Wilson Central Wildcats @ #6 Northwest Vikings

Northwest finds itself in the same position as last fall entering Week 2. Following a dominant win over Fort Campbell, the Vikings face a much better team in Wilson Central. Last season, the Wildcats made their presence known with a 45-14 blowout.

Although the Vikings looked very good on Friday, I think we’re in for another game that gets away from them.

White House-Heritage Patriots @ #7 Kenwood Knights

This weekend’s second Robertson County vs. Montgomery County matchup is a tough one for Kenwood. The Knights gave up a 7-0 lead to Hillsboro on Friday. It was a solid defensive performance, but against a team like the Patriots, you have to score to keep up.

Unfortunately for the Knights, they just aren’t there yet.

Clarksville Now’s Pick: White House-Heritage 27 – Kenwood 7

#9 Fort Campbell Falcons @ #10 Clarksville Academy Cougars

Both of these squads lost by more than 40 points on Friday and find themselves in tough spots. The Falcons are trying to transition an offensive tackle to running back and a linebacker to quarterback, while the Cougars are simply trying to stay healthy enough to keep playing.

Ultimately, I think this proves to be a needed get-right game for the Falcons and, hopefully, an opportunity for Clarksville Academy to come together.
