CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Drivers who rely on River Road may have seen some recent improvements and pothole repairs, but those are only temporary fixes for a key route that needs a major overhaul.

Montgomery County Highway Supervisor Jeff Bryant told Clarksville Now that permanent solutions are going to have to wait a while longer, mainly because of ongoing construction of the new Highway 48/13 bridge.

“We care about River Road and about everyone who travels that road,” Bryant said. “We know River Road needs some TLC; however, the improvements needed would require closing River Road for a period of time. Closing the road while construction continues on the new 48/13 bridge would be a traffic nightmare for anyone who travels back and forth across the Cumberland River.”

He said the department wants to avoid putting commuters through all those delays.

“Until the (bridge) project is done, we cannot give River Road all the attention it deserves.”

The Highway Department has taken measures to reduce traffic on River Road, and they just finished a temporary paving/patching job to help smooth out potholes while they wait to do a permanent road resurfacing and stabilizing project.

“The temporary job is not the final fix to this road,” Bryant said.

Continued River Road improvements are planned for spring 2023, but those are contingent on completion of the 48/13 bridge.

“We ask for patience and support as we continue to keep a close eye on the road conditions,” he said.
