CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – In July, members of the Northwest High School marching band traveled to Camp MARC in Dover, Tenn where they helped campers learn about music.

NWHS director of bands Megan Kuhns joined fellow teacher Riley Braem, director of Camp MARC’s music and drama program, to bring  members of the Northwest Vikings Band to the camp as volunteers.

For the past 62 years, Camp MARC at Brandon Springs Group Camp has served adults with complex disabilities. Campers spend a week participating in a range of activities including arts & crafts, music, drama and sports as well as events like the Camp MARC Olympics and Cabaret Talent Show.

During their visit, the students taught campers how to play a variety of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments and offered flag and rifle demonstrations. They also hosted an instrumental petting zoo for the campers.

“Camp MARC is such an awesome organization,” said Kuhns. “I was ecstatic when we were invited to go and share our love of music with the campers. It was a really fun way for us to give back to our community, we are already excited to go back next year.”

The Northwest Vikings Band returns from their experience at Camp MARC ready for their competitive season. They will perform in various competitions throughout the state as well as at Northwest High School football games, which begin Friday, August 23.
