CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Montgomery County will be getting a second Driver Services Center (commonly called a DMV) location, and it could be here as soon as the start of 2025.
State Rep. Jeff Burkhart said this project has been in the works for several years now and has gone through many changes, pushing the construction back further and further. He said the original plan was to shut down the current Driver Services Center at 220 W. Dunbar Cave Road and build the new one.
Burkhart proposed a budget amendment for the DMV locations last year, in 2023. This amendment ensures that the existing DMV will continue to serve along with the newly built one, a decision that has been approved. “In other words, it’s a recurring expense that I asked for because Montgomery County needs a second location,” Burkhart told Clarksville Now.
Construction for the second DMV is already underway at 635 Hornbuckle Road near Exit 11.
Jerrold Pedigo, owner of Jerrold Pedigo Realty and Construction, is leading the construction effort on Hornbuckle and told Clarksville Now this has been a long time coming.
“It’s been sitting on the side of the stove for a long time,” Pedigo said. “Finally, it’s got all the ingredients put into making this cake that we’re just waiting to start cooking it.”
Pedigo said the plans were tweaked extensively, which caused the timeline to keep getting pushed back. It was only recently that their site plans were finally approved.
According to Pedigo, with the plumber on the way to do underground work, the slab could be laid in a matter of weeks, with framing to follow. The brand-new DMV, Pedigo says, will be a brick building, about 9,000 square feet, with much better parking arrangements than what is available now at the current location on West Dunbar Cave.
“Depending on the fall and winter weather, I’m hoping to get them (DMV employees) in there in early 2025,” Pedigo said.
