So just what is this killer also known as Melanoma? Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults from 25-29 years of age. Its cancerous growths develop from unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells which trigger genetic defects that lead skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. These tumors originate in the pigment. Melanomas often resemble a mole; however, they can also be skin colored, red, purple, blue, or white. Its cause is by frequent sunburns and too much UV exposure.

So, who’s at risk? Everyone is at risk. On average a person’s risk for Melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than 5 sunburns and the risk increases by 80% is you have sustained 5 or more sunburns in your youth. In most cases among the 18-29 year old range, 76% were attributable to tanning bed use. According to experts at Skincancer.org, one person an hour dies from Melanoma.

Self-awareness and prevention are crucial to avoid becoming a melanoma statistic. You can do your part by getting any questionable area looked at by your dermatologist, making sure you have an SPF no lower than 30 and no higher than 50, making sure your ingredients include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide; both key ingredients creating a physical barrier, and by protecting yourself with sunglasses, long sleeves, and wide brimmed hats.
Treating sun damage can be an option. Bella Medical Spa offers a variety of services to “undo” and prevent further damage from forming. You can also get a summer glow by choosing sunless spray tanning. We use a FDA approved solution applied to you skin with our mist applicator to give you a natural looking tan without harmful UV rays.
