KNOXVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Austin Peay baseball team traveled to Knoxville and lost to the Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday night 13-4.

The Volunteers got on the board early, plating three runs in the first inning. The first runs came on a two-run homer from Henry Ford to put the Vols up 2-0, and then a single up the middle plated another in the inning.

The Vols scored one more in the second and entered the third inning with a 4-0 lead. Star third baseman Ray Velazquez got the Govs on the board with a solo shot, making it a 4-1 game heading into the bottom of the inning.

However, the Vols exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third, and despite some competitive innings the rest of the way, those runs proved to be too much to overcome. The Govs ended up falling 13-4 and were outhit by the Vols 13 to 7.

Outside of that third inning, this game was fairly competitive. From the fourth inning onward, both teams scored three runs. However, when playing an elite program like Tennessee, you cannot afford to make mistakes or have an off inning.

It wasn’t all bad for the Govs though. Velazquez, who got off to a slow start this season, picked up two hits, including that solo home run. Kyler Proctor also picked up two hits and scored a run on the night. Colin Carney also provided some nice relief out of the bullpen, tossing three innings and only allowing one run while striking out two.

The Govs will now head north from Knoxville to Eastern Kentucky for another ASUN series this weekend.
