CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – After heading down the road to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt in Week 1, the Austin Peay football team will be back home in Week 2. The Govs are welcoming the Morehead State Eagles to town as they look to pick up their second win of the season.
The Govs’ first win of the season came in Week 0 against Gardner-Webb. It was the rare opportunity for the Govs to have a home game in August, and the team was able to secure a victory. Of course, any time the Govs play an SEC team, as they did in Week 1, they’re going to have a tough time. Austin Peay put forth a valiant effort against the Commodores, and a win this weekend gets the team right back on track.
The Eagles are a team that the Govs are very familiar with, so let’s dive into the preview and see what we need to know about this opponent.
What to know about Morehead State
Morehead State plays in the Pioneer League of the FCS, which is a non-scholarship league. So naturally, the talent is typically lesser than the talent in other conferences like the UAC.
So far, the Eagles have played two games in 2026. Their Week 0 matchup was against Ohio Dominican, a Division-II school. The Eagles fell to their DII opponent in overtime for a shocking defeat. Morehead State did bounce back in Week 1 though, as they took down NAIA school Kentucky Christian by a score of 75-24.
Quarterback David Parsons has been one of the bright spots for the Eagles so far. The quarterback has thrown for 767 yards and nine touchdowns in two games. Wide receiver Anthony Ice has been the Eagles’ best playmaker this season, with 319 yards and three touchdowns already.

This will be the 11th all-time meeting between Austin Peay and Morehead State. Morehead State was victorious in each of the first five meetings, starting in 2001 and ending in 2005.
However, the Govs have won five in a row dating back to 2006. The four matchups since 2017 have all been blowouts in the Govs favor, with the Govs scoring at least 56 points in each contest. In 2025, the Govs beat the Eagles 56-7.
Game prediction: Govs win big
For the Govs to lose this game, multiple things would have to go horribly wrong, as they are far more talented across the board.
We have seen the Eagles put up big numbers on offense this season, but that has been against much worse competition. Austin Peay’s defense just held its own against an SEC team, so they shouldn’t have too much trouble with the Eagles.
On offense, Chris Parson and company should have no problem putting points on the board. This is the type of game where you hope to be able to rest the starters for the majority of the second half. Don’t be surprised if the Govs score 60+ in this one and head into conference play on a high note.
