CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Rossview High baseball traveled into opposing territory and walked away as region champions on Saturday.
After being down 3-8 to the Clarksville High Wildcats in the top of the seventh inning, the Hawks did not panic. Instead, they chipped away at their deficit and scored 7 runs in the inning.
Rossivew defeated Clarksville High by a score of 10-8.
Coming into the weekend, CHS had won five consecutive games, including defeating Rossview twice to clinch a district championship victory.
The Wildcats started this game out better than they could have hoped.
Offense was the name of the game early on. Both teams scored two runs during the first inning, and Rossview added an additional run in the top of the second to break the tie.
However, Rossview wouldn’t score again until the seventh inning. After giving up the lead in the second, Clarksville High controlled every aspect of the game.
CHS scored at least one run from the bottom of the third all the way to the sixth inning. In total, they accumulated six runs during that time span.
According to Game Changer, Layton Trice, Gavin Dufault and Korbin Reynolds were the offensive leaders for the Wildcats on the night.
- Trice – 3 for 3 with a double, two runs batted in and a hit-by-pitch.
- Dufault – 2 for 5 with a run batted in.
- Reynolds – 2 for 3 with a walk earned.
Rossview takes lead
After building on their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Clarksville High looked to close out the game.
They had five insurance runs to work with, but that didn’t seem to faze Rossview High.
The Hawks were able to get eight consecutive players on base before the first out was recorded. At that point, they had already tied up the game with each team having eight runs.
The game remained tied until Caden Slaughter came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. With a 1-1 count, Slaughter singled to centerfield and brought two runners in to score and take the lead.
The inning ended with Rossview High leading 10-8 after overcoming a five-run deficit. The Hawks’ senior ace, Cannon Rice, came on to earn the save in the next half inning.
Clarksville High got two base runners, but they weren’t able to drive them in, which resulted in Rossview High becoming 2022-23 region champions.
According to Game Changer, the Hawks had a plethora of offensive leaders on the night, including the following:
- Brodie Prairie – 2 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in and a walk.
- Brady Cooper – 2 for 3 with 1 run scored, 1 run batted in, 1 walk earned and 1 hit-by-pitch.
- Slaughter – 1 for 3 with 1 run scored, 2 runs batted in and 2 walks earned.
- Houston Hebert – 1 for 3 with 1 run scored, 2 runs batted in and 1 walk earned.
What’s next
According to the TSSAA, after their region championship victory, Rossview will host Collierville in sectionals. That game is scheduled for Wednesday as the Hawks look to keep their momentum going.
As for Clarksville High, they will look to bounce back following their latest loss. The Wildcats are scheduled to face Henry County on Sunday with the winner moving on to the next round of the playoffs. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
