Clarksville, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – With the holiday season winding down, many nonprofit groups are preparing for a sharp rise in donations.

Each year from December 26-31, Goodwill reports a dramatic rise in the number of donated clothes and household items due to people cleaning out their closets, attics and garages to make room for holiday gifts. Others may be seeking a last-minute tax deduction for charitable giving.

In 2018, the company reported 46 percent increase in donations as compared to other days of the year.

Here are some tips when considering what items to donate:

  • Follow the One Year Rule. If no one has worn, used or played with a particular item all year, then it may be a good candidate for donation.
  • Remove any clothes hangers before donating clothes.
  • Check hours of operation before heading to a donation center, and make sure an attendant is on duty before dropping off items.
  • Some items cannot be donated. Goodwill and other sites cannot accept household chemicals, tube-operated TV’s and other items.
  • See if there are perks for donating. Goodwill offers a 10 percent off coupon for their stores on the back of a donation receipt.

Where to donate:

The store is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m-5 p.m. and accepts donations of gently used furniture, housewares, clothing, electronics, books and movies.
