NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) — A bill that would catch people who speed around stopped school buses passed the State House of Representatives Monday night.
The bill (HB0268) is co-sponsored by Democratic Representative Jason Hodges of Clarksville and Republican Representative Matthew Hill of Jonesborough.
The measure would put cameras on the outside of the buses and would record drivers who drive through the buses’ stop signs that are deployed when children are boarding and leaving the bus.
Once collected, the video would be reviewed and, if needed, turned over to law enforcement officers. It would then be the individual district’s decision on how many cameras to use and which buses need them the most.
“I’m proud of the bi-partisan support this bill has received. It shows how lawmakers on both sides can come together to protect our children,” Rep. Hodges said.
The bill is still moving through the Senate.
