CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County is moving forward with their low-cost spay-neuter clinic set to open August 1.
The Humane Society is already scheduling appointments at this time for the new service for the community. Amy Shaver, Executive Director of the Humane Society shared some details and her excitement about the new program.
Shaver said the spay-neuter equipment for the clinic was purchased with a grant from Petsmart Charities for close to $70,500 and the Humane Society has brought in Dr. Amanda Gerboth, who received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, to handle clinic operations.
Gerboth began her career as a veterinarian for the U.S. Army and has enjoyed civilian life as an Animal Practitioner in Clarksville for the past two years.
“I am so excited to be joining the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County. I am passionate about supporting the human-animal bond that is so vital for a large portion of our community,” Gerboth said. “By ensuring access to high quality, low cost spays and neuters, we will not only support the health of our animal companions, but do so in a way that is available for as many people as possible.”
State-of-the-art medical equipment is used for every surgical procedure with excellent patient care being their highest priority.
Shaver talked about the history of the Humane Society and why they decided to stop their shelter services and refocus on preventative programs like spay-neuter. “When we had the shelter for every one pet we adopted out, dozens were being euthanized, so we had to stop animals from getting to the shelter to begin with,” she said.
Since 2004 the spay-neuter voucher program allowed the Humane Society to spay and neuter over 9,500 animals using the services of various veterinarians in Clarksville-Montgomery County. With the new clinic they will be able to spay-neuter about 6,000 animals a year.
“We will be able to make a lot bigger impact a lot faster for our community which in turn reduces overpopulation, euthanasia and suffering,” Shaver said.
Along with Petsmart Charities, another partner has also been instrumental in the growth of the Humane Society. With the support of Singletary Costruction the Humane Society has also been able to expand their offices located at 940 Tennessee Avenue, behind Arby’s on Riverside Drive, and increase the services they can provide the community.
Spay services for cats are $50 and neuter services are $40. It will cost $60 to get a dog spayed and $50 to be neutered. Other services are also available through the Humane Society’s spay-neuter clinic team.
