West Creek High School football did not end last season like they wanted to. At 1-9, the Coyotes fell short of many of the goals they set out to obtain. After four years under head coach Jon Offutt, who resigned last November, the Coyotes will take the field this August with a new head coach, and a new attitude.
James Figueroa, who was an assistant under Offutt, is now the head coach of the Coyotes, and is very optimistic about the future of his program.
“We’ve talked about how the culture of West Creek football program has to change. I want our players to represent West Creek the right way. We have to be a disciplined football team. It starts in the classroom and transforms to the football field,” Figueroa said. “We have to compete in drills, practice, and in games. We talked about our Coyote Core Values: Positive attitude in Practice, Great Work Ethic on the field, Compete for positions, and Sacrifice for the Team. That means playing a position where you are needed.”
West Creek will have their team camp at school from July 24-27, and scrimmages at Hillwood July 29, and Pope John Paul and Gallatin on August 5.
“I am excited about this season. We have about 70 players coming to workouts and conditioning. The players are buying in to what we are doing,” Figueroa said. “They are coming together as a family and playing for each other. Our motto this year for our players is ‘I’M IN!’. They are excited and ready for the 2016 Football Season.”
Figueroa is also excited about the coaching staff he has assembled. Bill Youngquist will be the defensive coordinator. Zach Bisto will serve as the Coyotes offensive coordinator, and Shannon Causey, Chris Carbin, Cuevas Dargan and Marcus Gildersleeve will be the other assistants.
The West Creek Coyotes open their 2016 season on August 19 against the Kenwood Knights.
