Common categories include voters who will be out of the county, college students in schools outside of their counties, voters with physical disabilities, and any voters who are 60 or older. If you register to vote by mail, you must have voted in person in at least one election in your county before you can vote by mail, unless an exception applies.

Check your registration status now
Are you registered to vote? Have you moved since you last voted? Do you remember the last time you voted? Making any needed changes now will save you time when you vote this year. Now is a great time to make sure your registration is up to date by contacting your county election commission.

Mobile devices in polling places
Under State Law, you may use a mobile electronic or communication device for information purposes to assist in making election decisions in the polling place. You may not use a mobile electronic or communication device for telephone conversations, recording, or taking photos or video while inside the polling place.

Don’t forget your photo ID
Voters who vote in person during early voting or on Election Day must present a photo ID issued by the federal or Tennessee state government. These ID’s may be current or expired. College students ID’s and photo IDs issued by cities, counties and other states will not be accepted.

Honor vote program
The Honor Vote program gives Tennesseans the opportunity to dedicate their vote to active-duty military personnel and veterans.

About the Program
The Honor Vote program lets Tennesseans dedicate their vote to those who are serving or have served our country. The men and women of the U.S. military ensure our freedom and democracy, allowing us to cast a ballot each Election Day. The form can be found at the Honor Vote Home Page.

How it Works:
Dedicate your vote to a U.S. veteran or active duty military member at GoVoteTN.com/honor
Share your dedication on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using #GoVoteTN
Receive a packet in the mail with an Honor Vote button and Voter Information Guide
Wear the button and vote on Election Day in honor of the veteran or service member you choose

Poll workers needed
Would you like the opportunity to get involved in the election process by performing an invaluable civic duty for which you will be paid? Every county needs diligent poll officials committed to working during early voting and/or on Election Day.

Voters with Disabilities
Every polling place in Tennessee is equipped with an accessible voting machine that allows voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately.

What if I want assistance when voting?
Voters have the right to have anyone of their choice, except a candidate or poll watcher, assist them during the voting process. If you want assistance, please ask any election official during the voting process.

What if I am a voter with a disability who does not have an acceptable photo ID?

Any person with a physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more life activities and who does not have a Tennessee driver license may obtain a free photo ID.

To obtain this free photo ID, you must take a letter from a Tennessee physician verifying you identity to a participating driver service center.

For questions regarding what documents are acceptable to verify one’s identity, call the Department of Safety at 1-866-849-3548 or the Division of Election at 1-877-850-4959.

What if my polling place is not accessible?

Voters whose Election Day polling places are not accessible may vote in one of the three ways:

Voters during the early voting period at the county election commission office

At least 10 days before Election Day, file an affidavit with the county election commission office stating that your polling place is not accessible and you want to vote at the county election commission office on Election Day; or

Request an absentee ballot and vote by mail.
