CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Police responded to a crash Sept. 5 around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of College St. and 9th St.
According to Officer Natalie Hall, the driver of a Chevy Tahoe, Joseph Denver Hines, was traveling north when a Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by Edwin S. Harris, turned left in front of him towards 9th St. Hines said he attempted to swerve but there was nowhere to go. A witness corroborated his statement.
The passenger of the Mercury Grand Marquis, Shirley Harris, was injured in the crash and was transported to Gateway Medical Center, then transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Shirley Harris, 76, died Sept. 11 at Vanderbilt Medical Center from injuries sustained in the crash. Officer M. Spielhagen is the lead investigator.
According to her obituary, Harris was born on August 23, 1937 in Meridian, MS to the late Willard Lee Ables and Velma Louise Brewer. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Harris, Jr. of Clarksville, TN; son, Edwin Harris, III (Lenore) of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Donna Amos of Pinellas Park, FL; brother, Rev. Willard E. Ables (Betty) of Chickasaw, AL; sister, Betty Jean Moore of Satsuma, AL; and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel with Rev. Willard E. Ables officiating.
