In March of 2022, Visit Clarksville launched a series of Challenge Trails, turning local tourism into a game that encourages people to explore the area, collecting pins and prizes along the way.
Since then, the response has been huge, with 6,025 location “check-ins” and 281 Challenge Pins earned so far!
Hank and Ann Elston of Clarksville is among those who completed all 18 trails.
“We’ve lived in Clarksville for five years and like to collect pins and badges. We saw this pop up on the app and it looked like a great way to get to know the area better,” Hank Elston said. “We learned about new places and historic sites, but also the stories behind some of the art pieces and beautiful historic homes.”
While 70% of the pins have been earned by locals, 30% have been visitors. These are mostly people visiting family or friends, and they do this activity together while they’re here. Visitors from Maryland, Illinois, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and California have earned Challenge Pins.
Cheryl Barnes in Clarksville is another who earned all 18 pins. “It is a definite something-fun-to-do for anyone that visits us rather than trekking to Nashville for the usual, been there, done that scene,” Barnes said. “Thanks again to Visit Clarksville for creating such a fun way to see our beautiful city!”
How it works
The 18 trails take visitors to 293 places across Montgomery County.
Visitors start by downloading the free VisitClarksvilleTN mobile app from the Apple Store or Google Play.
Under the Trails tab in the app, users will find a list of “trails” themed by areas of interest like Public Art or Brews and Beverages. Each trail contains 7-30 places where users can check in. When a user completes the set number of check-ins (usually about half of the total locations), they earn a Challenge Badge in the app, and they later receive a Challenge Pin by mail from Visit Clarksville.
