CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) At this week’s meeting, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board approved a request from the Clarksville Police Department (CPD) for the city to build a Police Precinct on the Rossview schools campus.
The school system is leasing one acre of land along Rossview Rd. near Rossview Elementary School for the precinct to be built. The agreement is similar to the CPD District 1 precinct near Minglewood Elementary School on Cunningham Lane.
Chief Operations Officer for the school system, James Sumrell, emphasized the importance of the police precinct, saying there are over 3,000 students along with hundreds of employees and staff on the campus every day.
“It’s a great benefit to the district because of the crime deterrent aspect of having a precinct. We believe the presence of the precinct on the campus is a great enhancement to the overall security of the campus,” Sumrell said.
Sumrell said an agreement was established in 1987 that the school system would share its property with both county and city government. Other examples of facilities on school property in Montgomery County include EMS stations, community centers, sports fields, swimming pools, and parks.
The precinct at the Rossview schools complex will have its own entrance, driveway area and parking along with landscaping to separate it from the school campus. A member of operations from the school system will be on the design team of the facility to make sure the building complements the school campus. No timeline has been given for construction or completion of the project.
