CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A meeting will be held Monday, September 15 for residents of a Clarksville neighborhood to discuss the rezoning of Whitfield Rd.

A developer has proposed the rezoning of the area of Whitfield Rd. near 101st Airborne Division Parkway in order to build an unidentified ‘gas station/pharmacy/neighborhood store’ that may be open 24 hours a day. The new business is rumored to be a Walmart Neighborhood Market, but Councilwoman Kaye Jones said this has not been confirmed.

During a recent City Council meeting, members voted in favor of the rezoning, including Jones, who said she had not heard any opposition from community members prior to the vote.

Afterward, Jones said she began to receive emails from constituents who are opposed to the rezoning, which prompted her to set up a public meeting. “I felt the responsible thing to do was to have the developer come and tell them what they intend to do, and the neighborhood can come and give opinions.”

Many of the citizens’ concerns include traffic, congestion, sidewalk development, and noise. Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church is especially concerned about the impact the rezoning will have on the members of the congregation.

Jones said another concern involves the gas pumps at the proposed store, whose lights could potentially remain on at all hours and may cause light pollution in the neighborhood.

The council will vote again on the rezoning October 2 during its regular session.

The public is invited to attend the community meeting Monday, September 15 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2526 Whitfield Rd. from 6-7 p.m. The developer will bring visuals and plans to help the neighborhood understand the impact of the proposal.
