CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The City Council this week will be deciding the fate of the Parking Commission and its operations.
In June, the City Council voted to postpone an ordinance to abolish the Parking Commission. Then, the council voted to postpone again in August until their October regular session meeting.
Future of Parking Commission: How we got here
The proposal to abolish the Parking Commission came from Councilman Joe Shakeenab, who spent almost four years on the commission and said it’s unable to enforce violations if someone doesn’t pay for a ticket. He said it felt it was his duty to bring the problem to the City Council’s attention.
During the last discussion on the topic, several council members said after speaking with downtown business leaders, they have additional concerns. Several members objected to the solution of adding ticket enforcement duties to Clarksville Police.
The City Council will revisit the subject on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.
