CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Montgomery County was held Saturday at Governors Square Mall. Hundreds of people turned out for the event despite the rain. The theme of the fundraising event was to help “Close the Book on Cancer,” save lives, deliver a message of hope and remember those lost to the disease.

There was something for everyone with inflatables, a dunking booth, a train ride for the kids, plenty of food, and Firefighters from Clarksville Fire Rescue set up an obstacle course for children. There was a different themed lap each hour and unfortunately because of the rain the Luminaria Ceremony was moved to the After Party on June 11 at Old Glory Distilling Co.

In 2018, the American Cancer Society provided information and services to 123 Montgomery County residents. Of those, 74 were newly diagnosed, and 14 were uninsured, on Medicaid and/or Medicare.

12 patients received 29 head covers (hats and/or scarfs). 26 patients received a Personal Health Manager tool kit. 18 patients received a wig. 24 patients received lodging assistance through the Hotel Partners Program or the Hope Lodge. The American Cancer Society provided 323 nights of free lodging to Montgomery County Residents saving those patients and their families more than $64,000.
