Mabel Stockdale York, age 84, of Clarksville, Tennessee passed away October 21 after a lengthy bout with Alzheimer’s disease.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., October 25, 2013 at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel with Rev. Steve Lannom officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, October 24, and from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service on Friday October 25, at the funeral home.

Born July 28, 1929 in Benton County, Tennessee, Mabel was the daughter of the late Virgil and Della Stockdale. She was preceeded in death by brothers Cecil and Thomas Stockdale and sister Mildred Robinson. Mabel was married to the late William Douglas York and is survived by her children, Joyce York (Michael Messing) of Knoxville, Tenn.; Timothy York of Huntingburg, Ind.; and grandchildren Andrew and Jacob Messing. She is also survived by her sister, Billie Martin of Nashville.

Mabel is a 1947 Clarksville High School graduate. After starting her family, Mabel fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher by earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Austin Peay State University. She then taught in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System for 20 years.

Mabel enjoyed travel, reading, watching sporting events, and gardening.
