Contributed commentary by Dave Bilan about the impact fireworks can have on veterans:
We all support celebrating our national birthday, with many enjoying the “rocket’s red glare” of fireworks. However, the fireworks season in many neighborhoods has expanded significantly, often spanning April through September and lasting late into the night.
This is a gentle reminder that prolonged use of professional-grade fireworks can be overwhelming for those of who have served in combat environments. Fireworks can trigger PTSD symptoms due to their loud noises and unpredictable nature, which may resemble gunfire or explosions. This can lead to intense reactions, flashbacks, and heightened anxiety during fireworks displays.
Additionally, small children and pets can be traumatized and suffer long-term effects.

This is not to suggest a ban on fireworks. However, you can support our veterans, kids and pets (as well as be a good neighbor) if you consider following these suggestions:
- Plan fireworks for a reasonable time (an hour or two around dusk).
- Opt for flashing fireworks: Select fireworks that produce visual effects without loud explosions.
- Choose a large open outdoor area away from homes and vehicles. Remember, what goes up must come down (sometimes on fire).
- Designate clear perimeters to keep the public at a safe distance.
- Consider attending an organized fireworks show rather than using personal fireworks.
Professional fireworks displays offer larger, more impressive fireworks that are designed for public viewing and provide a well-planned show.
A professional show saves you money and takes the liability, safety and the work off your shoulders, allowing everyone to just sit back and enjoy the show.
Finally, if you are going to use personal fireworks, please limit it to the holiday. A veteran is less likely to experience an episode of PTSD when they know to expect explosions from 8-10 p.m. on the Fourth of July versus random booms at odd hours for days
Wishing everyone a festive and safe Fourth of July holiday,
Dave Bilan
