CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Fire Rescue and the City of Clarksville are urging residents to review fireworks regulations and safety as the Fourth of July approaches.
Fire Prevention officers are responsible for inspecting all temporary fireworks tents throughout the city, according to CFR spokesperson Codie Jordan. Vendors are permitted to sell fireworks from June 10 to July 10.
Under City Code Sec. 10-218, fireworks can be used within city limits only from July 1-5, and from 6 to 10 p.m. However, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks in any city park, recreational facility or property, except during city-sponsored events.
It is also unlawful for anyone under 16 to possess or use fireworks unless directly supervised by someone at least 18.
State law adds further restrictions. Tennessee Code Annotated 68-104-112 prohibits igniting fireworks within 600 feet of a church, hospital, asylum, public school, or within 200 feet of a location where fireworks are stored or sold. It is also illegal to ignite fireworks inside a motor vehicle, throw fireworks from a motor vehicle, or throw them toward a vehicle or others.
CFR is urging residents to follow these safety tips:
- Read labels and understand how each firework works before lighting.
- Ensure a responsible adult, 18 or older, is supervising.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- Light one firework at a time and move away quickly.
- Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass and other flammable materials.
- Keep a bucket of water, hose or fire extinguisher nearby.
- Never relight a dud; soak it in water overnight.
- Do not carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them from metal or glass containers.
- Wet down spent fireworks and place them in a metal trash can away from buildings.
- Use caution with sparklers, which can reach more than 1,200 degrees. Children should not handle them.
