CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Kirkwood Cobras took a trip down Peachers Mill Road for a matchup with the Knights at Kenwood on Tuesday. The Kenwood girls kept it close early, but the Cobras strung together multiple stops at a time to inflate the lead, coming away with a dominating 56-25 win.

The two teams went blow for blow in the first six minutes, but an 11-0 run at the end of the first quarter for Kirkwood was the first of many long stretches of defensive dominance. Forward Davia Collins highlighted the scoring with eight points in that stretch, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Following that, the Cobras held the Knights to only four points in the second quarter, scoring 17 of their own to take control of the contest. Forward Kennedy Andrews powered Kirkwood’s scoring in the quarter, with six.

For the Cobras’ head coach, Tenisha Lockridge, she’s starting to see the team chemistry show on both ends of the floor. “This group has played together for a few years now, even in summer ball and middle school,” said Lockridge. “Their chemistry is visible on the floor, and they play smart basketball because of it, making that extra pass, sharing the basketball, and working well together on the defensive end.”

The second half was pretty even, but the lead was too big for Kenwood to overcome. The Knights were led in scoring with an eight-point performance from guard Zakiya White, but her scoring wasn’t enough, and Kirkwood picked up an all-important in-city road win.

“We’re still looking for people to step up the scoring,” said Kenwood head coach Jemiah Harrison. “Our girls have done a really good job of sharing it, but we want to see more consistent scoring. At the end of the day, we accept the loss and have to move on. These games prepare us for the district season, and that’s what really matters.”

“I’m proud of my girls tonight,” said Lockridge. “We bounced back from a tough loss, we focused on us, and we hit all the goals we set tonight. Moving forward into districts, the record is 0-0, and it’s a new season. These teams know us best, and nothing is going to be easy.”
