James Lee Slate, age 88, of Clarksville, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019, at Centennial Medical Center.

James was born December 3, 1930, in Nashville, TN, to the late Edna Grace Mitchell and Slayden B. Hand, Sr. He was raised in Montgomery County by his mother and stepfather, A.I. Slate. Mr. Slate was also preceded in death by two sisters, Anne Kelly and Edna Faye Doyle.

James owned a home building company and was a US Marine veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clarksville, where he taught youth Sunday school and was a member and teacher of the men’s Baraca Class. He was a coach and mentor for Clarksville’s little league baseball program.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 12, at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, with Dr. Felts Dent and Bro. Bill Morris officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, January 12, from 1:00 PM until the hour of service, at the funeral home.

James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sue Trotter Slate; two sons, Steve (Kathy) Slate and Neal (Cheryl) Slate; daughter, Jane Slate (Kirby Talley); and brother, Arthur Robert Slate.
