CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The community is invited to downtown Clarksville for the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event will take place July 4 beginning at 9:00 a.m. on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse.

“The Fourth of July is more than barbecues, fireworks and family gatherings,” said David Brockman, event organizer. “This isn’t a protest or political rally. The goal of this event is to remind us all that the holiday has a deeper symbolic meaning.”

Now in its seventh year, the event hopes to reinforce the importance of the Declaration of Independence.

The Independence Day commemoration at the Montgomery County Historic Courthouse provides citizens with the opportunity to experience history. For the seventh consecutive year, the celebration at the Historic Courthouse brings Revolutionary history to life with the reading of the Declaration of Independence followed by the shooting of the cannon and musket firings executed by the Sons of the Revolution.

“We are honored to host this event outside the Historic Courthouse each year. It is a unique and memorable experience that I look forward to attending again this year,” stated Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett.

The Sons of the American Revolution is an American congressionally chartered non-profit organization that was founded in 1889. The group is dedicated to perpetuating American ideals and traditions, and to protecting the Constitution of the United States.

The Sons of the American Revolution will have a color guard participating and Porters Battery will crew the cannon. It is advised that the viewing public arrive early since the street facing the Customs House Museum will be closed.
