CLARKSVILLE, TN – Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County is excited to announce its second annual Kids Recycling Challenge, inviting youth ages 3-17 to collect aluminum cans and plastic bottle caps to help the environment, support local families, and compete for prizes.

The inaugural challenge in 2025 was a tremendous success. Children who submitted recycling logs collected more than 2,500 aluminum cans and 1,500 bottle caps. Thanks to their efforts, our community recycled more than 1,800 pounds of aluminum—the equivalent of keeping more than 57,600 cans out of local landfills. Now, Habitat is challenging local youth to help double that impact in 2026.

Last year’s overall winner, Killian, was inspired by knowing that every can he collected helped bring a family one step closer to a safe and affordable place to call home. “If kids want to help their community but aren’t old enough to build houses yet, they can still help by collecting cans for Habitat for Humanity,” says Killian. “The cans help Habitat build homes for people who need them.”

Collected aluminum cans help support Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building affordable homes for hardworking families in Montgomery County, while plastic bottle caps are recycled into playground equipment.

The challenge runs from June 1 through Aug. 1. Participants can collect recyclables at home, school, church, or throughout their neighborhoods and submit them at the Clarksville ReStore. Prizes will be awarded in two age groups (under 10 and over 10) to the boy and girl who collect the most aluminum cans and the most bottle caps, for a total of eight prizes.
