FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Fort Campbell will host Military Survivor Appreciation Week Sept. 7-16.
The kick-off event is the Parrish House Survivor Outreach Services Building Re-dedication Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. The Parrish House, located at 5002 Screaming Eagle Drive, served as home to Fort Campbell’s commanding generals for 67 years. In 2014, Maj. Gen. James McConville, former commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell, donated the Parrish House to Survivor Outreach Services for use in helping Gold Star Families find comfort in their time of need.
The re-dedication completes a seven month-long repair project. The repairs included replacing kitchen counter tops and appliances, painting the interior and exterior of the building, replacing lights and doors, and installing park benches, a playground and minor landscaping. Nearly 200 community volunteers contributed to the project.
After the re-dedication, the Boots on the Ground display will officially open Sept. 7-16 at the 101st Airborne Division headquarters, 2700 Indiana Ave.
“The purpose of the boots is to allow a safe place for survivors, active duty, battle buddies, veterans and their Families to find healing,” said Suzie Yates, Army Community Service-Survivor Outreach Services program manager.
During Military Survivor Appreciation Week, more than 7,000 military boots standing in memory of a fallen service members since 9/11 will line the lawn of the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters building. The Run for the Fallen begins at 8 a.m. on Sept, 8 at Town Center Park, at the corner of Indiana and Michigan avenues.
“The Run for the Fallen is a commitment to remember all of our fallen soldiers,” said Jennifer Wick, Morale, Welfare and Recreation supervisory sports specialist.”
Participants have the choice of two routes to take during the un-timed run or walk. The first is a 2.37-mile route. The second route is shorter at 1.3 miles. The routes will encompass several Memorials and the boot display. The course is stroller friendly. Bicycles and pets are not permitted.
The final event in the Military Survivor Appreciation Week is the Memorial 9/11 Wreath Laying Ceremony at 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at division headquarters.
