CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Dwight C. Jemison has announced his candidacy for Clarksville City Council, Ward 8.

Jemison, 52, is a 32-year resident of Clarksville. He was born in Detroit, raised in Van Wert, Ohio, graduated Van Wert High School in 1990, and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he hoped to run for the Army track team. Instead, he said, he was run right into Desert Storm. Two years later Jemison was stationed at Fort Campbell, where he was medically discharged.

Jemison made his home in Clarksville in 1992. He was employed by Electrolux for 11 years as a supervisor and graduated the HVAC program at Tennessee Tech. In 2018, Jemison opened an upholstery shop called Dajha’s All in One and later named it DJ’s All in One Upholstery. He said he currently uses the business as a space for second chances to those who have lost their way or need an opportunity to use their skills to get back on their feet.

For the past 30 years, Jemison has been mentoring and raising young teens who are now successful adults, assisting families with everyday needs, walking numerous citizens through the expungement process, co-founding Chance at Change, volunteering with Team I’m Invisible anti-bullying and suicide prevention, and he co-founded You Been Blessed. Jemison is a mentor for the Veterans Court program and is a member of the Foster Care Review Board.

He said his goal is to work with his community to preserve Clarksville and its people, with people being first.

“My ‘why’ for the past 30 years has been all for the people. I don’t play when it comes to the people. Proof is in my history,” Jemison said. “If you’re not eligible to vote, I am happy to assist you in changing that. No matter who you vote for, it’s your duty to vote.”
