CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A man has been found guilty of vehicular homicide and several other charges in a 2023 head-on collision that involved five vehicles.

On June 7, 2023, at about 7:25 a.m., Samuel Thornton, then 22, was travelling westbound on the 41A Bypass when his SUV crossed into the eastbound lane going 70 mph in a 50 mph speed limit zone, according to previous reports.

Thornton hit two other SUVs, a pickup truck, and a semi-truck. One of the drivers, Angela Hoilett, 48, was killed, and another driver was critically injured.

On April 23, after a four-day trial, a Montgomery County jury found Thornton guilty of vehicular homicide by reckless conduct, reckless aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, driving while his license was suspended, revoked or cancelled, improper lane change, failure to exercise due care, and speeding, according to District Attorney General Robert Nash. Sentencing is scheduled for July 24.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Crystal Morgan and Chief Deputy District Attorney Marianne Bell with assistance from Victim-Witness Coordinator Shelby Moss. Sgt. Victoria Crosby with Clarksville Police Department’s Fatal Crash Investigative Team was the lead investigator.
