CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – One of Clarksville’s most iconic landmarks, the RJ Corman Bridge, will be honoring Autism Awareness Month by participating in the ‘Light It Up Blue’ campaign to celebrate Autism Awareness Month.

Each year, different cities all over the world participate in this campaign by lighting businesses, schools, historic landmarks and homes blue, to honor all the families that are affected by autism.

The newly lit RJ Corman Bridge, located over the Cumberland River in downtown Clarksville, will be lit up with blue lights throughout the entire month of April, with the exception of Easter. April 2 is Autism Awareness Day.

Progressive Directions, Inc. employees, Cathy Schafer and Margaret Davis, thought lighting the bridge would be a wonderful way to recognize Autism Awareness Month. Progressive Directions is a local non-profit organization that serves individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

For both Schafer and Davis, this month holds a very special place in their hearts.

“My daughter Kelly has autism and I think any opportunity we have to share awareness is wonderful,” Schafer said. “When I lived in New York, I remember seeing different buildings honor Autism Awareness and I thought this would be a great opportunity for Clarksville to do the same thing.”

Davis also has a son with autism.

“I think any awareness of any disability is a good thing. As a parent of a child with autism, it is so touching to see how a community can support something as important as this,” she said.

The bridge will be lit up thanks to the help of County Mayor Jim Durrett and Elizabeth Black, the Communications Director for the Montgomery County Government.
