Now that kids are returning to school, Boy Scouts of America is actively recruiting for units in Montgomery, Houston, Stewart Counties and Fort Campbell, which comprise the Cogioba District.
There are different types of scouting units available for children based on their age and grade level. They are split into three groups.
The Cub Scout program is for children in the 1st through 5th grade. This program focuses on character building, citizenship and development of personal fitness skills. Cub Scout Packs have begun reaching out to parents of eligible boys during the schools’ Open House Nights. There are over 20 Cub Scout Packs across the Cogioba District, so there is a unit close to most families. Kids are not required to join any particular unit and parents are encouraged to find a unit that fits with their family’s schedule.
The Boy Scout program is for boys in middle and high school, and they will be recruiting in the middle schools during their open houses later this month. Boys who wish to join must be at least 10 ½ years old and younger than 18. Boy Scouts focuses on teaching outdoor, lifesaving and leadership skills. Each troop is unique, and youth are encouraged to find the unit they like.
Venturing is a co-ed program by the Boy Scouts for youth in high school and most of college. Kids can stay in the program until they turn 21. Venture groups tend to develop their activities with the interest of the youth involved. The program focuses on leadership, group activities, adult association and high adventure.
