CLARKSVILLE, TN – The 101st Airborne Division hosted a ceremony uncasing its Division Colors at the Wings of Liberty Tennessee Museum on Tuesday following its return from the U.S-Mexico border.

The division headquarters spearheaded operations for the Joint Task Force – Southern Border since October 2025, recently transferring authority to the 1st Armored Division, May 29 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, according to a 101s Airborne news release.

Tuesday’s ceremony featured an uncasing of the unit’s flag and banners. The ceremony represented the completed mission of the division’s headquarters and subordinate units to a joint environment and recognized the commitment of the unit’s soldiers.

“We were responsible for all 1,954 miles of the southern border, from Imperial Beach, San Diego all the way to the Gulf of America,” said Maj. Gen. David Gardner, commanding general of the 101st and Fort Campbell, in the release. “It was incredible work by the Border Patrol, incredible work by all the service members of every single service. It’s a mission that we’re proud of, and it is great to be back.”

Honor Eagle and celebration

Following the ceremony, a division tradition known as the “Honor Eagle” to say farewell to Brig. Gen. Travis McIntosh and Brig. Gen. Joseph Katz.

McIntosh served as the 101st Deputy Commanding General for Operations since June 2025 and was the Deputy Commanding Officer for Support from June 2024.

“Our mission at Fort Campbell and in the 101st Airborne Division is to deploy rapidly, seize the initiative by air assault, and win on tomorrow’s battlefield,” said McIntosh. “What made this assignment so special is that our soldiers and families are supported by a community that understands and embraces that mission. I leave deeply grateful and am confident that the Screaming Eagles are prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead.”

McIntosh will serve as the Deputy Director for Regional Operations, Joint Staff, at the Pentagon for his next assignment, the release said.

Katz has served as the 101st Deputy Commanding General for Support since September 2025 and recently returned with the Division headquarters from the JTF-SB.

“To the community, this is the post of choice for soldiers in the United States Army,” said Katz. “It is because of you: how you welcome us when we get here, how you embrace us while we are here, and it’s how you support us even when we’re not here with our families. And I will forever be grateful I got to serve in this division, at this installation and community.”

Katz will serve as the next Commandant of Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York, the release said.

The ceremonies concluded with a special celebration. The Screaming Eagles, who have played a vital role in the nation’s defense since World War II, celebrated the Army’s 251st birthday with a cake cutting.
