CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Montgomery County Commissioner David Shelton has announced his candidacy for re-election in District 21.
Shelton was first elected in 2022 and has since served on multiple committees, including the Beer Board, the Audit Committee, the Public Safety Complex Committee, the Jail and Juvenile Committee, and others. He currently serves as chairman of the Purchasing Committee.
“It was my honor to be asked to run again and continue serving the constituents of District 21,” Shelton said. “To represent the part of the community where I grew up is a special privilege that I will always cherish.”
He is a graduate of Clarksville High School and has attended Middle Tennessee State University and Bethel University. His 20 years of community service includes serving on several of city boards and nonprofit groups.
In the early months of his term as commissioner for District 21, he worked to establish the live captions for commission meetings for the deaf and hard of hearing. “That’s just a part of what we need, though,” Shelton said. “A great many deaf and HoH folks use American Sign Language, and captions just aren’t as accessible to them as we would think.”
Shelton said that his goals for a second term include building more awareness for the needs of high-risk youth, and supporting resources for those families. He has also pledged support for completing the Highway 374 loop, which currently ends at Dover Road in Woodlawn. As a member of the School Board Liaison Committee, he also supports building new schools to reduce the need for portable classrooms.
Transparency is the key to any successful term as a public servant, and Shelton pledged to continue bringing complex local government workings to the everyday person. “Folks have questions. Together, we can find answers.”
