Candidate Lee Reeves suspends campaign
Friday afternoon, Reeves responded to Trump’s endorsement by suspending his campaign and putting his support behind Van Epps.

“This summer I entered the special election for Congress because I fully support President Trump and his America First conservative agenda,” Reeves said in a statement. “Throughout the campaign, I consistently told voters that President Trump is our quarterback. … Today, the President called a play I did not expect. He endorsed Matt Van Epps and gave him his complete and total endorsement to be the next Congressman for Tennessee’s 7th District. The words I said on the campaign trail were not hollow. I meant them. I support our President, and if this is the call he has made, I will back him up. Therefore, I am suspending my campaign and will stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump.”
Reeves encouraged his supporters who haven’t yet voted to vote instead for Van Epps. Reeves’ name will remain on the ballot, as the withrawal deadline passed before early voting began.
Gov. Bill Lee endorsement
Thursday evening, the campaign announced an endorsement from Gov. Bill Lee. Van Epps worked for the Lee administration as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services.
“Matt Van Epps is the conservative, America First fighter we need representing Tennessee,” Lee said. “As a West Point graduate, decorated Special Operations combat pilot, current National Guardsman, and former member of my cabinet, Matt has the character and the courage to go to Washington and fight for Tennesseans. In his time as Commissioner, he worked to cut red tape, increase accountability, and drive government efficiency.
“He will stand fully with President Trump, bringing that same results-driven leadership to Congress to defend our conservative values, and fight back against the liberal policies that threaten our way of life. My friend Matt Van Epps has my complete and total endorsement, and I look forward to calling him my Congressman. I’ll be casting my vote for Matt, and I encourage all conservatives to join me in doing the same on October 7th.”
Van Epps was also endorsed by former District 7 Congressman Mark Green.
Early voting for the party primaries ended Thursday, and primary Election Day is Tuesday, Oct. 7.
