CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A new scholarship program will support career training for Austin Peay State University journalism students while providing additional coverage of local news.
The Local Government News Scholarship is supported in its first year by Blackhorse Pub & Brewery and Wendy’s of Clarksville. Each business has fully funded a one-semester internship at Clarksville Now, with the focus on local government coverage.
“I am a firm believer in local journalism,” said Blackhorse co-owner Jeff Robinson, who proposed the scholarship. “I hope we can help an APSU journalism student and enhance our local coverage at the same time with this money.”
Blackhorse is supporting the fall 2024 semester and Wendy’s the spring 2025 semester. Their support goes 100% to the internships.
This is a significant expansion of the existing news internship program at Clarksville Now, which covered one internship each summer. This will add two internships – during the fall and winter semesters – bringing the total to three internships each year.
The interns are selected from applicants pursuing journalism in the APSU Communications program. They work part-time during the semester under the guidance of Clarksville Now editors and reporters, and their internship is eligible for course credit.
“As Clarksville Now takes ownership of local news in our community, we have an additional responsibility to help prepare new journalists for an exciting and rewarding career,” said Chris Smith, editor-in-chief of Clarksville Now. “It’s especially encouraging to see Blackhorse and Wendy’s jump in to help us do that. We can’t do our work without the support of local businesses like these, and it makes me proud of our community when I see businesses come together like this to build a better Clarksville.”
