CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northeast High football team traveled to Clarksville High School for a night of seven-on-seven action between the Eagles and Wildcats.
Seven on seven is pass-only football, focusing on route combinations as well as defensive backfield coverages. It’s designed to prepare skill players for what they will see in the fall, as well as get in some good practice against competition. Northeast first year head coach Deonte Weston thinks that seven-on-seven is extremely helpful for his new squad leading into the 2024-25 season.
“For us, it’s about not only learning the plays, but learning about each other,” Weston told Clarksville Now. “We have a whole new scheme, and they are buying in to what we’re doing. We came out a little slow, but I like how we responded. You can’t get down and dwell on things, you have to play the next play.”
As for the host of the evening, head coach Isaac Shelby and the Clarksville Wildcats, seven-on-seven is huge not only for their offense, but their defensive scheme as well.
“It helps a lot more defensively, getting reps and seeing different route combinations,” said Shelby. “It’s good experience for the kids. Tonight, we caught a lot of balls, got a lot of different kids in, I’d say it was a pretty good night.”
