CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – West Creek Athletics has announced the hire of Clarksville native Mikaela Colemon to lead the Coyotes girls’ basketball team moving forward into the 2023-24 season.
Colemon’s basketball experience is made up of 15 years of coaching and playing, which includes playing for two high school basketball programs in town – the Northeast Eagles and the Kenwood Knights.
She also was a walk on girls’ basketball player for Belmont University before her playing career was cut short due to injury. Before accepting the position, she had previously been working as the head coach for West Creek’s middle school program. In addition to coaching at West Creek Middle School, Colemon also has experience working with AAU basketball programs.
“Previously I was the West Creek Middle School coach, and I have really loved watching those girls grow,” Colemon said. “I’m a product of this city, and I’ve experienced what basketball is here. I kind of have a different perspective on it, because it’s not what it used to be. That’s a beautiful thing and a scary thing, but I really loved being a part of watching those kids grow and teaching them the basketball that I grew up on because it is a different type of game.”
Colemon said she was ready to move to the high school level, because she wants to give back to her community. and be a part of building up the brand of girls’ basketball in the city.
When asked what her message to the West Creek community was, Coleman said, “Be patient. Building a program like we see in Clarksville High and Rossview takes time. With that being said, be dedicated to that process. We want to build something for our kids, and we want to build something they are proud of. A lot of it is trusting the process, the coaching staff and the administration as we try to get back what we had years ago.”
Colemon ended the interview by saying she’s excited for what’s to come in her hometown.
