Restaurant Review by Pamela Holz, Realtor with Reliant Realty

Looking for an authentic Mexican meal without the trip to Mexico? La Casa Taqueria on New Providence Blvd., just east of Dover Crossing, is a great spot to check out. From the freshly made guacamole and chips to the tamales and street tacos, my first trip to La Casa convinced me that it will not be my last.

As the menu is extensive, I looked to the waitress for suggestions. Without hesitation, she pointed me to the 99 cent tacos with meat options ranging from Al Pastor (marinated pork), Carnitas, Chorizo, Barbacoa (roast beef), and Carne Asada (steak) to the more adventurous choices like Chicharron (pork skins), Lengua (beef tongue) or Tripa (tripe). I love a good carnita, so I went with that, along with a tamal.

While waiting for the meal to arrive, I enjoyed a bowl of freshly made guacamole ($3.25). Their claim is that they la-casa-2don’t even touch the avocados until you order the guacamole. From the freshness of flavors that were combined in that guac, I believe it. Not too much onion, and a whole lot of lime and cilantro, along with smooth avocado chunks and juicy bites of tomatoes.

I was delighted when my carnita taco arrived also liberally topped with cilantro and lime juice. The tamal ($1.75) was exactly what I was hoping for: a tasty treat of moist pork wrapped in a delicious envelope of masa harina.

la-casa-3The cheery colorful interior of the cozy restaurant was matched by the cheerful waitress. I enjoyed looking at the black and white photos of families from days gone by, wondering if perhaps these were the people who had shared the recipes with the chef.

Finishing off my dining experience with a cold glass of Horchata ($1.75) was like sipping a bowl of rice pudding… without the rice kernels. It is rice milk mixed with cinnamon and vanilla, served over ice. Delicious and refreshing, it makes a great dessert.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to check out La Casa or their food truck, you are in for a treat!
