CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is proposing a road improvement project for State Route 12 (the Ashland City Road Bypass), which includes a traffic signal and turn lanes at Glendale Drive.

According to the resolution that went before the Finance Committee on Monday, the City of Clarksville owns property on the Bypass at the intersection where the road improvement project will take place. The project is listed on TDOT’s FY 2026-28 safety project list.

TDOT, City of Clarksville confirm project details

Clarksville Street Department Director David Smith told Clarksville Now that while the state project is independent of the city, he confirmed a key component will be a new traffic signal at Glendale Drive where it intersects the Bypass. “The resolution states that the city will own the infrastructure once it is installed, which is pretty standard,” Smith said.

As part of the upgrades, TDOT is going to widen that portion of the roadway to allow for a left turn lane from the Bypass southbound, then two lanes going east to west for motorists making a right turn from the Bypass onto Glendale.

TDOT spokesperson Halen Tyler said Tuesday the scope of the project also includes, but is not limited to, pavement striping, delineation, signage updates and signal head upgrades.

Residents eager for safer intersection

Nearby resident Melisa McKenzie told Clarksville Now she’s glad to see the improvements coming. “I think it would definitely benefit us; I live four houses down from the intersection, and I can literally be sitting in my house and hear accidents happen.”

McKenzie said residents have been asking for the upgrades for years, but she did question whether the the safety improvements would bring more traffic congestion.

What’s next for proposed Bypass update

With the Finance Committee approving the proposed road improvement project on Monday, the resolution will now go to the City Council.

The council meets for their executive session meeting on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
