If you’re having trouble with your kitchen cabinets, don’t rush to expensive solutions. There may be an easy fix.

Here are five things you can do at home for cabinets that may break or be out of style. This will save you time, money and heartache.

1. Loose hinge? Grab some toothpicks around the house, fill the hole as best as possible. Tap the toothpicks into the hole as needed. Redrill a small hole where the original hole was. Now reinstall the hinge with the original hinge screw.

2. Sagging shelf? Determine the type of shelf pin in your existing cabinets. It’s either going to be a 5 millimeter or ¼ inch. Once you have figured this out, measure to locate the center of the shelf and drill your 5 millimeter or ¼ inch hole to allow for your new shelf pin placement. Now, put your shelf back in the cabinet.

3. Has your cabinet door been ripped off its hinges? Rout out the damaged area. Take a piece of wood that is the same size of the area your cut out. Apply wood glue to your piece of wood. Now, fit that piece of wood into the space you just cut out, clamp it and allow it to dry. Redrill hinge holes and install hinge.

4. Does your kitchen need a facelift? Don’t waste your money on laminated coverups that big box companies will charge you triple for, because they won’t last long. Instead, make it a weekend family project family by sanding down the cabinets to bare wood. Refinish them with your choice of cabinet-specific paint or stain. Most of the time, the cabinets are still in good shape.
