CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A day after the Clarksville High School girls golf team won a state title, and a day before volleyball was set to play for a district championship, the Wildcat faithful came to watch their most consistent autumn powerhouse – the girls soccer team – do its thing.

With a 2-0 victory over West Creek on Wednesday, the Lady Wildcats won their 10th consecutive district championship. This match marked West Creek’s first appearance in the district championship after they knocked off Rossview the night before, 3-2.

The veterans of Clarksville High came out swinging, taking two shots in the first minute and a half. One went wide and the other bounced off the post, but this opening salvo was a preview of things to come. The ladies in purple dominated possession throughout the first half, coming just shy of scoring any goals despite several good looks.

Junior keeper Ariy Denson of West Creek could only weather the storm for so long. Senior Mattie Wiggins struck first for Clarksville in the 44th minute with an assist from Faith Allen as the Wildcats resumed their pressure to start the second half.

The Lady Coyotes left Clarksville’s senior keeper Maddie Bond largely untested on the night, but a big save in the 49th minute stymied hopes for a quick equalizer. As the minutes passed, play became more physical and desperate, with West Creek’s Leilyn Mercado picking up the sole booking of the night, a yellow card in the 53rd minute for a frustrated shove in the back.

Clarksville remained calm and poised, finding another successful opening when seniors Baileigh Badell and Kaden Cobb connected for a second goal with 16:16 left to play. Cobb described it later, saying, “Baileigh played me a perfect ball, and I was like, ‘Let me hit this.’ I took a touch and I just hit it and it went in. My first instinct was, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s insane!’”

When asked about the history of an entire decade of championships, Cobb and the other seniors downplayed its significance leading up to the game. “Honestly, I feel like we didn’t think about the history at all. We just played the game we know how to play,” she explained.

After the fact, though, Wiggins and Bond agreed that the victory had significance. “It means a lot to us, and to the girls who played in the past, to keep this record going.”
