CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Northeast football got off to a slow start Friday at home and could never regroup, suffering a 58-0 loss to Henry County with the Region 7-5A title on the line.
“They’re so good at sustaining drives,” said Northeast football coach Brandon Clark. “They threw some passes at us that we haven’t even seen yet. We felt like we had a good plan down, but we didn’t execute…We are going to have to use this loss as a learning situation.”
The Patriots spoiled the Eagles’ homecoming both through the air and on the ground.
Patriots wide receiver Jawon Odoms was a thorn in the side of Northeast’s defense, pulling in two touchdown grabs in the first half.
“I felt warm coming in,” Odoms said of his performance. “We came out here and did our thing.”
Odoms is currently committed to the University of Memphis and will head to play for the Tigers next fall.
“I have a bunch of family down there,” Odoms said of of what factored into his decision. “I felt like it was a good fit for me. I was born there and that’s where I want to be at.”
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Damron finished the contest with four total touchdowns in just three quarters played.
“He’s an outstanding player,” Odoms said of his teammate. “I’m glad he’s our quarterback. He does the right things when we need him to.”
The stout defense that the Eagles boasted through their first five games of action was nowhere to be found against the Patriots.
Henry County running back Jermarcus Johnson ripped off numerous long gains on the ground, rushing for two scores in the first quarter alone.
Odoms discussed how Johnson’s effectiveness as a runner helps open things up for the the rest of the offense.
“He does everything really,” Odoms said. “When he busts a few big runs, they start focusing on him more than they do me and next thing I know, I’m in the end zone.”
Northeast was able to string together a few solid series on offense, but each drive eventually stalled out.
Clark hopes his group can regain its confidence quickly, beginning with another home contest next week against Antioch.
“We have to believe in ourselves,” Clark said. “That’s just all it comes down to.”
