CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- The Commission on Religion and Racism (CORR) of Clarksville gathered at the Montgomery County Courthouse Thursday morning for a peaceful protest.

CORR members participated in one of the many community protests that have been happening in Clarksville and across the nation in response to the May 25 death of George Floyd, who was killed at the hands of Minneapolis Police officers.

Leonia Tucker, president of CORR in Clarksville, said it’s imperative to keep the injustices and inequalities at the forefront.

“It shouldn’t stop because George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Armaud Arbery are buried. It shouldn’t stop,” Tucker said. “Until we get our rights, the laws must change. These police officers need to be held accountable and not get a slap on the wrist. If it was one of us we’d be under the jail. It is time for change, and we want it now.”

CORR had several leaders scheduled to speak to the crowd.

“We really want to address why we aren’t considered equal when it deals with African-American,” Tucker said. “… It’s time for justice. Slavery has been abolished so why aren’t we equal under the color of law?”
