CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – With the 2020 NFL Draft looming, the Tennessee Titans front office looks to continue building on a solid offseason.
Tennessee has gotten younger and freed up cap space after getting rid of veteran players Delanie Walker and Jurrell Casey.
Titans general manager Jon Robinson already addressed the lack of pass rush from a season ago by bringing in Vic Beasley who had a career high 15.5 sacks for Atlanta in 2016.
While the Titans have placed a franchise tag on running back Derrick Henry, both sides continue to work on getting a new deal done.
Even so, the organization may still choose to spend an early round pick on a pass catching back since they haven’t brought back Dion Lewis who has taken on that role for the team over the past few seasons.
Logan Ryan also still remains a free agent with his asking price proving to be too steep for most teams’ taste.
His replacement may be found in the middle rounds, as this is a rather deep draft for secondary help. Some possible options include Florida’s C.J. Henderson, Clemson’s A.J. Terrell and Alabama’s Trevon Diggs.
The Titans could also decide to go down a different avenue since they currently have a solid core of defensive backs in safeties Kevin Byard and Kenny Vaccaro along with cornerbacks Adoree’ Jackson and Malcolm Butler.
After losing former All-Pro lineman Jack Conklin in free agency to the Browns, the Titans resigned Dennis Kelly on a three-year, $21 million deal.
Despite the investment, offensive tackle may be another path the Titans prefer to take with the 29th pick.
There will likely be many linemen who fly off the board early on including Houston’s Joshua Jones and Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland. If either fall, Tennessee could presumably bring them in to compete with Kelly day one for the starting right tackle position.
The team may also potentially look to spend a later round pick to serve as a project piece at the quarterback position behind Ryan Tannehill.
Former first round pick Marcus Mariota was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders, paving the way for the Titans to bring in a new back up.
Jalen Hurts, who played in three CFP National Championship games, is expected to be drafted between the third and fifth rounds while Khalil Tate from Arizona is also viewed as someone who could be developed into a viable future asset.
The NFL has chosen to cancel all live events in Las Vegas due to COVID-19 concerns, but the 2020 NFL Draft will still go on as scheduled April 23-25.
