CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Walmart on Madison Street in Clarksville was filled Saturday morning with happy children and families along with law enforcement and supporting organizations for the annual holiday Shop With a Cop.

Dozens of local law enforcement officers joined 135 children and their family members on a shopping spree where each child had $100 to spend.

“It’s a great opportunity for the officers to get out and socialize and show what they’re really all about for our community,” said Dennis Honholt, detective with the Clarksville Police Department. “Law enforcement is more than just tickets and handcuffs, it’s about fixing and helping the community. Look around, every one of these officers are here on their own time because they believe the same thing.”

This year the majority of the children were chosen by counselors within the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System. They work closely with the children on a daily basis and have a better understanding of which children and families have the greatest need.

The event was supported by the Clarksville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Clarksville Police Union, Fraternal Order of Police, Clarksville Police Department Explorer Post 540, Citizens Police Academy Alumni and Mission BBQ.
