STEWART COUNTY, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Stewart County Sheriffs Department recently unveiled a new inmate rehabilitation program. ‘Paws and Prisoner’ offers inmates the chance to work with dogs that are in the care of the Humane Society and suffer from behavioral issues that make adoption difficult.
Inmates chosen for the program receive training from the Humane Society and Stewart County’s own K-9 officers. They work with dogs twice a day to improve their behavior.
Kennels have been built at the Detention Center in Stewart County, which are cared for and maintained by the inmates.
The Stewart County Sheriffs Office has called the kennel and the program a community effort, with several local businesses and organizations contributing to make it a reality.
The program further hopes to support the future construction of an animal shelter in Stewart County. Anyone interested in donating to this effort, would like additional information, can contact Tom Coulter at 627-4144.
