CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – At Monday’s informal meeting, a resolution was discussed by Montgomery County Commissioners to once again consider providing funding for to the United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region.

The resolution to provide $130,000 to the nonprofit organization came before the commission in July but failed to pass. District 5 Commissioner, Rashidah Leverett, has proposed a resolution which states that United Way provides support to much needed programs and local nonprofits in the Clarksville-Montgomery County community.

United Way Chief Executive Officer, Valerie Guzman, addressed commissioners and talked about the need for the funds. “Our population is still increasing. We have people who are setting up camps, our food distribution has not gone down, our community really needs it,” said Guzman.

Guzman added that the entire $130,000 would be passed along to the various agencies that are part of the United Way, none of the money would be used for staff salaries, and the funds would stay and only be used in Clarksville-Montgomery County.

Some commissioners expressed concern about giving the funds to the United Way, saying the organization is doing a good job in the community but support should be a choice of each citizen and not be done with taxpayer money.

The commission is expected to vote on the measure at its formal meeting Monday, October 14.
