CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The first permanent church building in Clarksville has received a reprieve after the Historic Zoning Board of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Regional Planning Commission met Monday and deferred a decision on demolition of the building.
The building at the corner of Main St. and 4th St. was built in 1830. It is the original home of what is now Madison Street Methodist Church. It was also home of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church before being turned into an apartment building.
The Montgomery County Historical Society was seeking an independent assessment of the structure after the owner said it was too old and damaged to restore. Brenda Harper with the Historical Society was pleased with the decision of the board.
“I think this was the least that could be done. To postpone the permission for demolition until we get a third party, that was our absolute minimum goal here. That’s been met and I’m very happy,” said Harper.
The owner has stated that he would be willing to sell the building. Harper said it’s always possible that one of the outcomes could be that the building can be saved which would offer alternative options for the buildings future.
