Wylie played with the Crofton Browns Colored Semi-Pro team while working as a coal miner in Crofton, KY. and later went on to play professional baseball for colored teams like the Memphis Red Sox in the 1940s.
He also played with the Kansas City Monarchs with Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige from 1944-1947. In 1989 he was honored as one of the forgotten baseball greats by the Atlanta Braves.
The following year, in 1990, the City of Clarksville honored Wylie and declared June 12 as Negro Baseball Players Day.
